The Problem
Agriculture and food production, one of the major contributors to climate change.
Solutions like indoor farming come with challenges. In small living spaces, people are too busy to deal with messes and insects. Some self-watering facilities cost too much energy. And half of the water that goes in a garden is wasted due to evaporation, wind or runoff.
The Solution: One step to greens is a hydroponic indoor farming unit, which doesn’t take much space, users don’t deal with any mess and don’t worry about taking care of them every day. While enjoying fresh vegetables at home, every user is taking their own step to fight climate change.
The product itself is a transparent water bank, the front of the product, I am using a ceramic material, it has the right amount of tendencies to allow water to diffuse through, transfer to the surface. The texture will also allow roots to grip.
Each unit can grow 2 types of veggies, On the top, you can grow leafy greens like lettuce, and the front is for small-scale greens like sprouts or microgreens. The product will add in varieties of vegetables to a family’s diet.
There are restaurants that sell as farm to table, but about 2 weeks of preparation and transportation are always in between from the origin to plate. By designing this product, I aim to reconnect consumers with the source of their food, to achieve zero packaging and zero transportation.
The units can be purchased with a metal rack, with the strong holding magnets on each cube’s back, they can be hung on the wall or directly on the side of the fridge.
Compared to the existing indoor farming facilities, one step to greens requires no pumps, no electricity, and no extra parts to maintain. It uses much less land and water compared to conventional farming, which will help reduce the land and forest that are devoted to farming.
By growing vegetables at home here in Nova Scotia, Canada, one piece of lettuce will save 22kg of carbon dioxide emissions if its from a local farm, and 833kg if it's imported from Spain. This product aims to reduce this number down to zero.
